The true strength and power of the GlobalEd Network comes from the vibrant partnership among participating school districts, the Columbus Council on World Affairs, the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio, and a variety of both community organizations and engaged corporations. The Columbus Council on World Affairs has led the administrative management of the Network, with assistance from the ESC, since its founding in 2012.

 

Global Education for All

Possessing the knowledge, skills, and mindset to thrive in our global society is no longer an optional component to responsible citizenship or successful employment. Global fluency is required at all levels of work, not just for leaders and not just for the privileged. “GlobalEd for All” is a foundational value for the Global Scholars Diploma™ and CCWA works tirelessly to ensure global competence is a core element of the mainstream educational system.

About Us

CCWA

The Columbus Council on World Affairs is a non-partisan, non-profit organization founded in 1975 by twelve forward-thinking individuals representing a cross-section of Columbus’ business, academic, and civic communities. Since its founding, the Council works to increase global awareness within the Columbus region through a variety of public and K-12 educational programs, recognizing that a globally competent community is a globally competitive community.

The Columbus Council on World Affairs joins 94 councils in 40 states, plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, as a member of the World Affairs Councils of America. This network of like-minded organizations provides the Columbus Council with valuable resources and national reach.

ESCofCentOhio_Logo

The ESC of Central Ohio accelerates the missions of school districts in Delaware, Franklin, Licking, Ross, Madison and Union counties, serving more than 200,000 school children in 28 school districts.

Through direct instruction and quality professional development, the agency partners with districts to improve education for all students, particularly those with special needs. The ESC offers robust educational consultancy through a growing list of programs including instructional coaching, administrative counseling, professional employment services and business services.

Superintendents of member districts officially commit to the Network’s mission and designate a lead person to actively participate in quarterly meetings. The following distinguished and innovative districts are proud members of the GlobalEd Network. Together, these districts represent more than 150,000 students.

Why it Matters

Jobs
& the
Economy

In a 2013 Gallup/Lumina survey of 600 educational leaders and 663 executives,

  • 92% of the leaders in education indicated that they felt their institutions were preparing students well for the workplace.

  • In stark contrast, 89% of the business leaders surveyed indicated that students emerging from our schools do not have the skills and global competencies their workplaces need.

  • In the same study, only 14% of Americans strongly agree that students are well-prepared for the workplace.

Clearly, the need for innovation in preparing students for college studies and/or employment in today’s global economy has never been more urgent.

Central Ohio employs more than 55,000 residents in exporting alone and more than 500,000 Ohio jobs involve international trade. According to the Global Cities Initiative, a joint project of Brookings and JPMorgan Chase, the central Ohio region “should craft and implement a growth strategy that builds on its special position in the global economy.” The report recommends “training students with skills necessary for jobs in the global economy and for assisting businesses trying to reach markets abroad.”

Area employers indicate that to help them grow they need globally competent employees; individuals who can:

  • communicate across cultures,

  • collaborate across borders, and

  • understand the world’s major markets

World’s Greatest Challenges

As the next generation tackles huge global challenges such as environmental sustainability, nuclear proliferation, the aftermath of natural disasters, widespread demographic shifts and conflict among nations and within countries, it becomes absolutely clear that only cross-cultural collaboration and global problem-solving skills will generate solutions to these kinds of issues that cross borders and affect us all.

  • How will we feed the world’s projected 9 billion people?

  • What can we do to slow global climate change?

  • Can human trafficking be stopped?

  • Is there enough clean water for the world?

  • How do we ensure our data is safe from cyber hackers?

  • Can terrorism by stopped?

Global competence ensures that we are positioned to collaborate across borders: as individuals, as a democracy, as a world. Our collective task, therefore, is to create opportunities for youth to obtain the knowledge, skills and mindset needed to solve these great challenges. The Global Scholars Diploma™ is one way to start.
